| Port au Choix National Historic Site preserves the most significant Maritime Archaic Indian site in North America. Here, nature has preserved a time capsule of rare importance. While prehistoric coastlines have long since slipped beneath the encroaching ocean, the raised shoreline and alkaline soil conditions at Port au Choix have combined to preserve rich vestiges of the three ancient cultures: the Dorset Eskimo, the Groswater Eskimo and the Maritime Archaic Indian. We started our three hour hike a the visitors center, went to an ancient cave, then along the ocean to ancient sites, back to the Point Richie LIghthouse and finally followed an old road along the ocean back to the visitors center. It was great to discover this remarkable place where the wealth of the sea has supported human settlement for over 4,500 years. |
